Oh yes, I know that sound. It was a frequent occurrence outside my bedroom window in the urban sprawl of Sarf-East London. The spot they picked for romance was the middle of the road at 2 am. I would be more likely to see a fox wandering the streets at 11 pm on my way home than to see a cat....Foxhounds and the jolly chaps in red are pretty fairly thin on the ground ever since Tony and his Cronies spent 700 hours debating their demise (contrasted with something like 7 or 17 hours debating whether the country should get involved in Iraq.)

Oh yes, I still remember the first time I heard foxes mating. I had absolutely no idea what it was (am a country girl by upbringing and back in the country they clearly have the decency to do it deep in the woods and not under our windows) and very nearly called the police.

The first time i heard foxes making babies (at 3am of course, when else?) my first thought was "OMG they're murdering a baby". It's *exactly* how you'd imagine that to sound.

For some reason we have very few urban foxes up here - I think I've only seen one in all the time I've been here. Whereas I used to see them every day pretty much in LDN.

One word: Ad-Block.

On further reflection, I'm not sure that's not two words. One-and-a-half, at least.

Londiniensis - so pleased you like it. It's something of a Lent staple, this one, and also a "argh, I have no money!" staple. Especially if you make it with dried beans rather than tinned, it costs pennies.

This an excellent vegetarian chilli. I prepared and cooked it on Wedneday, and kept it fridged to let the flavours combine and for the vegetables to absorb the liquid. Re-heated and served this lunchtime with baked potatoes to universal praise - even got an unequivocal thumbs-up from a family member who "doesn't like" spicy food. Congratulations!

It's flaked chillis, rather than chilli powder, and you need less to achieve the same effect.

I'll have to try that one. 2 tsp chilli better than my 2 tbs.
